Leadership Philosophy and Traits
I never fully understood what leadership truly meant until I had to step into a leadership role myself. "A leadership philosophy is a set of beliefs or principles that guide one's decisions and actions as a leader." (interObservers & interObservers, 2023, para. 2) "It acts as a compass, guiding leaders in decision-making, shaping their behaviors, and influencing their interactions with others." (Padmavati, 2025, para. 3) Throughout my life, I have worked in multiple industries, and one thing I have learned is that being placed in a leadership position does not automatically make someone an effective leader. There are "three common stereotypes about leadership: that top executives will naturally provide it, that your immediate supervisor will provide it, and that leaders must always be decisive and commanding." In reality, effective leadership requires strong beliefs, meaningful values, and intentional principles, not simply a management title. (Bateman, 2025, p. viii)
My leadership style is democratic, emphasizing collaboration, shared decision-making, and valuing input from all team members. Part of my philosophy includes thoughtful decision-making, maintaining motivation, and supporting both performance and morale. "Democratic leaders gather information, welcome opinions, and consider group preferences, often facilitating discussions or using consensus or majority vote to reach decisions." (Bateman, 2025, p. 317) This approach aligns with the reminder to "look (and think) before you lead," highlighting the importance of reflection and awareness in leadership. (Bateman, 2025, p. 320) Research also suggests that democratic leadership increases job satisfaction and engagement, both of which contribute to stronger performance outcomes. (Northouse, 2022, para. 4) In my work managing a large number of people in the real estate industry, making individuals feel included in the collaborative process consistently improves responsiveness and commitment.
Because the real estate industry relies heavily on independent contractors and vendors, effective communication is essential. Even though I oversee most projects, I recognize that the true experts are the professionals performing the work inside the homes. If I fail to consider their insights, I could overlook critical information or valuable solutions. As a manager, I have learned that the people you lead often have the best ideas regarding policies, workflows, problem-solving, and desired outcomes. For example, when I invited a contractor to propose a solution for a challenging renovation, their input not only improved efficiency but also increased their engagement and confidence in contributing to future projects. I believe that everyone should be treated as equal and important, regardless of job title. When leaders collaborate with their teams and communicate respectfully, they build stronger relationships and often inspire others to grow. (Towler et al., 2014, para. 6)
The traits I believe inspire others include confidence, empowerment, and consistency. Confidence demonstrates competence and builds trust, while empowering others shows that their contributions matter. Consistency ensures reliability and strengthens credibility. These traits, when modeled consistently, can motivate team members, foster a positive environment, and encourage professional growth. In addition to traits, effective leadership requires qualities such as integrity, accountability, adaptability, communication skills, and the ability to support and motivate team members. These qualities create the foundation for strong leadership and guide decision-making across diverse situations. By connecting my democratic style with these traits and qualities, I align my leadership philosophy with both practical experience and recognized leadership theories, including elements of transformational leadership that focus on inspiring vision and change, and servant leadership, which emphasizes prioritizing the growth and well-being of team members. (Northouse, 2022)
Inspiring others is not a requirement of leadership, but it strengthens the connection between a leader and their team. "Inspiration enhances follower motivation and contributes to trust and commitment within the organization." (Towler et al., 2014, para. 7) In my experience, leading with respect, openness, and shared decision-making not only supports better results but also creates a positive environment where people feel valued. By applying these principles consistently, I aim to foster a team environment where collaboration, trust, and motivation lead to both individual and organizational success. That is the foundation of my leadership philosophy and the approach I strive to model every day.
